Assessments include how heat waves and flooding affect defense efforts.
The Department of Defense (DOD) published a piece this week covering the leadership goals of Iris A. Ferguson, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Arctic and Global Resilience. “We’re trying to increase understanding of all the ways climate change is impacting the missions of the Department of Defense — and particularly how it impacts the warfighter,” Deputy Assistant Secretary Ferguson said.
The deputy assistant secretary is the principal advisor on climate change to Defense Secretary Austin and other department leaders, where she relays the findings of the most recent scientific studies and how they impact the Defense Department. Examples of climate concerns include the impact of rising sea levels on Navy ports or the effect of increased droughts and heat waves on active-duty soldiers. “DOD must prepare for and adapt to these changes,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary Ferguson.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the president and his science advisors to be led by the Lord as they intervene in climate issues.
- For Defense Secretary Austin as he evaluates environmental impacts on troops and military bases.
- For prudence for Deputy Assistant Secretary Ferguson as she fulfills her role in the Defense Department.
